Timely knowledge translation of research findings into health and aged care policy for Indigenous Elders

Abstract

Background
Despite the considerable amount of money spent on research relatively little attention has been paid to ensuring that the knowledge produced is integrated into policy and practice. The Royal Commission stated that the current aged care system gives insufficient attention to quality of life and does not provide culturally safe care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These are now key priorities of the new Aged Care reforms, requiring evidence-based knowledge and resources. A case study will be used to describe the factors that enabled the integration of evidence-based research into aged care policy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Method
The Good Spirit Good Life package will be used as a case study to illustrate the approach and methods followed for the conversion of research data into a practical, validated resource for older Aboriginal peoples, now embedded into aged care policy and practice. The processes will be described that built the capacity of Aboriginal researchers and postgraduate students, Elders, policy makers, and the health and aged care workforce.
Results
Time, cultural engagement methods, identifying community and partner priorities, ongoing collaborative planning, a common vision and co-design methods are all vital to effective knowledge translation.
Conclusion
The GSGL assessment package has been embedded into the new National Single Assessment and has been endorsed by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission to be used by providers to better support the quality of life of their clients, and for evidence against the new Aged Care Standards.
