You Can Create Your Own Blue Zone
Abstract
The paper presents hypothetical argument that you can create your own Blue Zone.
The paper draws on research from the author’s PhD, and what we can learn from the lifestyle of longest-lived persons in the Blue Zones, like Okinawa, Sardinia, and the Hunza Valley. These Blue Zones have more centenarians than other countries and the Elders have been found to have clean arteries, low cholesterol, and low homocysteine levels. Why are these Elders healthy and active at 90 and 100, while older persons in western societies are sedentary and unwell at 60 and 70?
The presenter argues we can create our own Blue Zones in our community. Biological ageing does not need to be commensurate with chronological ageing, being sedentary is not compulsory, disability is not mandatory, and decrepitude is not inevitable. The presenter proposes that, 60 can be the new 40, 80 can be the new 60, and 100 can be the new 80. It is not just the genes we were born with, it is the way we live our life. The presentation explores how we can avoid the behavioral and biomedical risk factors and create a Blue Zone. We don’t need to move to Okinawa or Sardinia, we can retro fit our own community.
The paper provides case studies, showing that increased health span and improved quality of life is available to almost everyone as they age, if they embrace the Blue Zone principles.
